Design Below the Line: How Design Impacts People Experiencing Poverty
Wednesday, November 6, 2019
To design for accessibility means to be inclusive to the needs of all users including users with disabilities and economic barriers so that they can participate independently in all aspects of our society. Understanding those needs is the key to crafting better and more accessible experiences.
One of the most common problems when designing for accessibility is knowing what needs you should design for. It’s not that we intentionally design to exclude users, it’s just that “we don’t know what we don’t know.” So, when it comes to accessibility, there’s a lot to know.
Join us at our Studio & Gallery in East Nashville on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 for a special Nashville Design Week Art Show and panel with artists and designers who have been impacted by homelessness and a variety of disabilities. Event attendees will hear how design has shaped our artists' lives both positively and negatively, including design in architecture, transportation, communication, technology, city-planning, and fashion. We’ll also discuss hostile architecture, a n intentional design strategy that uses elements of the built environment to guide or restrict behavior which typically targets people who use or rely on public space more than others. Hostile architecture typically reinforces social divisions and creates problems for all members of the public, especially people without homes, seniors, people with disabilities, and children.
Following the panel, we hope attendees will be inspired to look for ways to make design more accessible in their personal and professional lives. Panel speakers include POVA artists Ben, AM Hassan, Tre Deuce Ronin, Chris Bandy, Edwin Lockridge, and Kateri Pomeroy.
A light lunch will be provided to guests courtesy of PhatBites Deli. A suggested donation of $10 upon arrival is recommended if partaking in the provided lunch. Guests can also bring their own lunch.
While our event is officially SOLD OUT, we will be live-streaming our event on both our Facebook and Instagram platforms!
Our Nashville Design Week panel will tackle issues related to inclusive design in architecture, transportation, communication, technology, and city-planning. POVA panelists will discuss their experiences and the importance of designing for the needs of all users, including those with disabilities and economic barriers, so they can participate independently in all aspects of our society.
Nashville Design Week leverages the power of collaboration to bring together design professionals and the public, acting as the amplifier for exhibitions, talks, tours, workshops, and installations that showcase Nashville’s design talent and educate the public on the role of all design professions in bettering lives.
